Aura Hakuri

Biography

Aura Hakuri (1977) is a visual artist who lives and works in Helsinki. The field she works in consists of painting, drawing and performance art (performance duo Linda and Aura). Hakuri has graduated (MA) from the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki in 2007. She has had several solo exhibitions, participated in several group exhibitions and made numerous performances in Finland and abroad.

The materials and equipment that Hakuri uses are paper, watercolor, Indian ink, Sumi ink, and various drawing instruments. Her way of working is intuitive. She does not decide in advance the content or theme of the upcoming painting. The paintings often feature hideous characters, sore emotions – a wide variety of difficult-to-define events. Regardless of the subject, Hakuri approaches it with compassion and examines the whole spectrum of humanity through a gentle and benevolent smile. Hakuri paints images that reach for something common and essential in being human.

In addition to her active career as an artist Hakuri has been teaching in several Art Colleges and in the Art Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. At the moment she is working with the support of a 3-year Grant of Kone Foundation.
